I'm Amanda Hayhurst

For years, I believed traditional publishing was the only “real” path to becoming an author.

I had what I considered my “big book” inside of me — the message I truly wanted to release into the world one day — and honestly, it felt too important to self-publish. I thought maybe one day a publisher would validate it, choose it, and give it the platform it deserved.

So I did all the things I was told to do. And then I waited.. and waited. But no doors seemed to open for me.  Then a literary agent gave me advice that completely changed the trajectory of my life.

She said:
“Why don’t you self-publish something smaller first?”

At first, I viewed it as “practice.” A smaller step.
A way to learn the process. A way to build an audience and gain experience while still protecting what I thought was my “main” book for someday. So I self-published my devotional, Pray for Him.

And this “smaller” devotional went on to:
• sell over 100,000 copies
• land in Target stores nationwide
• grow an audience of thousands of women
• open doors for speaking and ministry
• and ultimately help lead me to a traditional publishing deal for the "bigger" book I was saving.

And this journey completely changed the way I view publishing. Because I realized something so many aspiring authors miss:

Self-publishing done with excellence is not a step beneath traditional publishing. Sometimes it becomes the very thing that opens the door to it.
